Behind every Ojos Grandes book is a process filled with imagination, memories, and emotions. Each story is born from something very simple: an idea, a feeling, or a moment in life that becomes a whole universe. Today, I want to share with you how a story is created, from inspiration to the book you hold in your hands.
💡 The spark of the idea
It all starts with a spark: a thought, a dream or an observation of everyday life. For example:
- A curious gesture from my daughters.
- An intense emotion that I wanted to understand.
- A character who appeared in my imagination and refused to disappear.
It is important to write down these ideas, because sometimes they fade away if we don't capture them right away. I use notebooks, notes on my mobile phone and quick sketches so I don't miss a single detail.
🖋️ Building the world and characters
Once the idea is clear, it is time to bring the characters and the world they live in to life. In Ojos Grandes, each character has:
- A distinctive feature that makes it unique.
- A personal story, even if brief, that makes it credible.
- A place or setting where you feel comfortable and connected to the story.
I usually draw the characters, write short notes about their personalities, and experiment with situations that help them grow. This step is essential so that readers can feel like they know the characters as if they were real friends.
📖 From sketch to complete story
Next comes the writing phase: turning ideas and sketches into a flowing story. This involves:
- Decide on the beginning, development and ending.
- Striving for a balance between action, emotion, and teaching.
- Review and rewrite several times so that every word has meaning and magic.
At first, I tend to write without censorship, letting my imagination flow. Then I review and shape it, making sure that every detail connects with the reader and awakens their creativity.
🎨 How to create your own story
I invite you to try it yourself. Here are some simple steps:
- 💡 Find your spark: observe something around you, a dream, or an emotion.
- 🖊️ Draw your character: even if it's just a scribble, give it personality.
- 🌍 Create your world: a place where anything can happen.
- 📖 Write a short story: it doesn't matter how long it is, just start telling it.

Remember: there are no wrong ideas. Every story is a universe that deserves to be told.
